In a significant move, the Detroit Tigers have signed Gleyber Torres, the former New York Yankees second baseman, to a one-year contract valued at $15 million. This deal, which includes a $500,000 assignment bonus, marks a new chapter for the two-time All-Star. Over his seven seasons with the Yankees, Torres established himself as a formidable player, boasting a batting average of .265 along with 138 home runs and 441 RBIs.

Last season, Torres contributed to the Yankees' success, helping them clinch the AL East title and reach the World Series, where they faced the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2023, he recorded a .257 batting average, 15 home runs, 63 RBIs, and 26 doubles. With the Tigers, Torres is expected to take on the role of second baseman, while Colt Keith, who previously held that position, will transition to first base.

Originally signed by the Chicago Cubs in 2013, Torres was traded to the Yankees in a deal that sent Aroldis Chapman to Chicago. He made his major league debut in 2018 and quickly made an impact, notably becoming the youngest player in American League history to hit home runs in four consecutive games.
