The Charlotte Hornets have finalized a trade with the Phoenix Suns, sending center Nick Richards and a second-round draft pick in exchange for forward Josh Okogie and three additional second-round picks. This strategic move aims to bolster the Suns' center position, which has been a significant weakness, as they currently rank last in points from their starting center.
Richards, who stands at 7 feet tall, has demonstrated his capabilities this season, averaging 8.9 points and 7.5 rebounds over 21 games. His performance improves notably in the nine games he has started, where he has averaged 11.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks, showcasing impressive shooting efficiency at 65% from the field over the past four seasons.
The Hornets, benefiting from a rich collection of draft assets, have strategically acquired two first-round picks and eight second-round picks since January 2024. In addition to Richards, the team also welcomes Okogie, known for his defensive prowess, adding further depth to their roster.
Moving forward, Richards is expected to contend for the starting center position with the Suns, who have relied on Mason Plumlee and rookie Oso Ighodaro in recent games. Veteran center Jusuf Nurkic is currently out due to illness but has also seen reduced minutes lately.
