The Heart: The Powerhouse of the Cardiovascular System
At the center of the cardiovascular system is the heart, a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body. The heart is divided into four chambers: two atria and two ventricles. The right side of the heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs for oxygenation, while the left side receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps it to the rest of the body.
Anatomy of the Heart
The heart’s structure is designed for efficiency. The atria are the upper chambers, which collect blood, while the ventricles are the lower chambers, responsible for pumping blood out of the heart. The valves between the chambers ensure that blood flows in one direction, preventing backflow. These valves include the tricuspid valve between the right atrium and ventricle, the pulmonary valve between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery, the mitral valve between the left atrium and ventricle, and the aortic valve between the left ventricle and aorta.
