The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers are both showing interest in free agent third baseman Alex Bregman, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. However, the Tigers may hesitate to meet Bregman's contract demands, which are believed to be around $200 million. The Houston Astros previously offered him a six-year deal worth $156 million, which Bregman declined. The Astros have since bolstered their infield by signing first baseman Christian Walker and acquiring third baseman Isaac Paredes from the Chicago Cubs, leading to speculation that Houston's offer may no longer be valid.
While the New York Yankees have also been linked to Bregman, there are doubts within the organization about whether Yankee Stadium would suit his playing style. Bregman has hit 210 home runs in his nine seasons with the Astros, but only 153 of those would have been home runs in the lefty-friendly confines of Yankee Stadium. This situation could potentially benefit the Tigers as they consider making a bid for Bregman, although it would likely require significant increases in their payroll, which is projected to be under $80 million for the 2025 season.
On the other hand, the Red Sox face their own challenges in acquiring Bregman. They need to make a decision regarding first baseman Triston Casas, who was previously on the trading block. Recent reports suggest that Boston is now more inclined to retain Casas. If Casas remains, Bregman might have to transition to second base, which would necessitate Rafael Devers moving to first base to accommodate him. Bregman finished the last season with a batting line of .260/.315/.453 and 75 RBIs, and while projections indicate a potential decrease in home runs for him in either Boston or Detroit, he would still provide a significant offensive upgrade to whichever team secures his services.
