The Detroit Tigers have made significant strides in their roster this offseason, following an unexpectedly successful previous season that culminated in a playoff appearance. This year, they have increased their payroll by over $9 million, bringing it to approximately $119 million, marking the third-largest payroll increase in Major League Baseball.
Key additions to the roster include veteran players Alex Cobb and Gleyber Torres, each signed to one-year contracts worth $15 million. These experienced players are expected to bolster the team as it aims for another competitive season, although both could be trade candidates if things do not go as planned.
While Cobb missed much of last season due to a shoulder injury, he managed to finish with a respectable ERA of 2.76 over a limited number of innings. Torres, on the other hand, has been consistent in his performance with the New York Yankees, and his offensive capabilities are anticipated to address the Tigers' primary need.
