Smoot kneed Ricard in the head after a play, resulting in a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty. This action was surprising given Smoot's history of only 12 penalties in eight years. He joined the Bills after a successful stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he recorded 23.5 sacks.
