The New York Jets are actively pursuing Joe Whitt Jr., the defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, for their head coaching position. This request follows Whitt's recent addition to the Commanders' coaching staff after a successful tenure with the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys under Dan Quinn.
The Commanders have not confirmed whether they will allow the Jets to interview Whitt, but according to NFL regulations, a virtual interview could occur anytime if approved. An in-person meeting will only be possible once Washington is no longer in playoff contention.
Whitt is one of several candidates for the Jets' coaching role, which includes interim coach Jeff Ulbrich, Kansas City Chiefs' Steve Spagnuolo, and Maryland's Mike Locksley, among others. The potential for both Commanders coordinators to leave comes after their impressive 12-5 season, marking a significant turnaround for the franchise after nearly two decades without a playoff victory.
