The San Francisco 49ers have signed running back Israel Abanikanda after placing Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve due to a knee injury. With McCaffrey and Jordan Mason sidelined, Isaac Guerendo is expected to step into the RB1 role.

Abanikanda, a fifth-round pick in 2023, had limited opportunities with the New York Jets before being waived. His addition comes as the 49ers seek depth in their backfield amidst injury challenges.
