The New England Patriots are entering NFL free agency with significant needs, particularly on the offensive side, but a glaring deficiency in their pass rush has also emerged. Following the trade of Matthew Judon before the 2024 season and the departure of Josh Uche last October, the Patriots find themselves with limited options, relying primarily on Keion White to fill the void.
The team’s ample salary cap space offers a chance to bolster their defense during the offseason. Mike Dussault from the Patriots' website identified Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Josh Sweat as a potential free agent target. Sweat enjoyed a strong 2024 season, notching 41 tackles and eight sacks over 16 games.
At 27 years old, Sweat was drafted by the Eagles in 2018 after a collegiate career at Florida State. His development into a full-time starter came in his fourth year, leading to a Pro Bowl selection. He followed that with even more impressive stats, including 11 sacks and an interception, despite not making the Pro Bowl that season. Sweat's consistency and youth could make him an ideal fit for the Patriots’ future plans.
