The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially begun preparations for the 2025 free agency period, starting with the release of veteran outside linebacker Preston Smith. Acquired via trade from the Green Bay Packers last season, Smith's tenure in Pittsburgh was underwhelming, totaling only two sacks in eight games and being scratched during the playoff loss to the Ravens. This release frees up $12 million in cap space, providing Smith an early opportunity to pursue new opportunities in free agency, which begins on March 12.
At 32, Smith's market remains viable despite a dip in production, having posted eight sacks in 2023 and a total of 41.5 sacks over the last five seasons. The Steelers, meanwhile, will need to address his absence in the lineup, with the primary pass rushers T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Nick Herbig already set for the upcoming season.
