The Carolina Panthers have fortified their backfield by signing running back Rico Dowdle to a one-year deal worth $6.25 million. Last season, the Panthers' rushing attack ranked eleventh in EPA, largely thanks to the offensive line overhaul and the impressive performance of Chuba Hubbard, who rushed for over 1,000 yards. Dowdle, previously with the Dallas Cowboys, gained prominence in the latter part of the season, handling 68.3% of the carries from Week 12 onwards and averaging 4.8 yards per carry.

Dowdle's versatility as a rusher is a valuable asset for the Panthers, particularly in their heavy zone concept run scheme, where he recorded a 57% success rate. Following a setback for fellow running back Jonathon Brooks, who is expected to miss the entire season, Dowdle's addition is timely. While Hubbard remains the starter, Dowdle is anticipated to take a significant share of carries, potentially solidifying himself as a top backup running back in fantasy leagues.
