The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant change in their quarterback lineup, opting to start Trey Lance for the Week 18 season finale against the Washington Commanders, replacing longtime backup Cooper Rush. Despite the Cowboys' 23-19 loss, Lance completed 20 of 34 attempts for 244 yards without scoring a touchdown or throwing an interception. He also contributed six carries for 26 yards.
Cooper Rush's absence from the starting position means he missed out on a crucial incentive linked to his playtime for the upcoming season. Heading into the game, Rush needed to reach 55% of the team's offensive snaps to secure an additional $500,000 in incentives, but his snap percentage will be below that due to Lance's start.
Head coach Mike McCarthy had previously supported Rush as the starting quarterback during the Cowboys' playoff push, wherein the team went 4-4 in Rush's eight starts since Week 10. Rush had a respectable touchdown-to-interception ratio but struggled with a lower passer rating compared to his peers.
