The Detroit Lions are adapting their schedule ahead of their Divisional Round playoff matchup against the Washington Commanders. In a shift from routine, the team held their red zone practice on Thursday instead of the customary Friday session. This change came as they prepare for their playoff game on Saturday, where the Lions are looking to capitalize on their recent recovery from injury struggles.
However, offensive guard Kevin Zeitler continues to be sidelined due to a hamstring injury, missing practice for the third consecutive day. Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed that Zeitler is the only player expected to miss the game, while rookie offensive lineman Christian Mahogany has shown promise in his limited appearances this season.
Mahogany, who has started one game and played in seven, is anticipated to fill in if Zeitler cannot play. His recent performance against the Bears has boosted the coaching staff's confidence in his abilities. Additionally, veteran Kayode Awosika stands ready as an alternative should the situation require it. Assistant head coach Scottie Montgomery praised Mahogany's maturity and readiness, emphasizing that the rookie is prepared for the physical demands of playoff football.
