In the previous season, he started five games, amassing a career-high 72 tackles, 1.5 sacks, five passes defended, and one interception, showcasing his versatility and ability to impact games on defense.

Originally an undrafted free agent, Elliss was tendered at the low level of $3.26 million by the Patriots, meaning they would not receive draft compensation if another team signed him unless they matched the offer. After visiting with the Raiders, Elliss signed their offer on March 19, compelling the Patriots to take decisive action to retain him. The move comes after the Patriots also signed linebacker Robert Spillane from the Raiders, further solidifying their linebacker corps.
