The Buffalo Bills have made a strategic roster move ahead of their regular season finale on January 5, recognizing the need for a third quarterback. In a bid to bolster their quarterback lineup, the team released linebacker Nicholas Morrow and signed Mike White from the practice squad to the active roster. With starter Josh Allen expected to have a limited role, White is set to back up Mitch Trubisky in the crucial Week 18 match against the New England Patriots.
Mike White, who has been part of the Bills' practice squad throughout the season, had previously been elevated for gameday action twice, including a Week 15 game against Detroit. However, due to the league's restrictions on elevations, the Bills had to find a permanent solution for White's availability. Head coach Sean McDermott noted the challenges in managing roster numbers and elevations, but ultimately, the team was able to secure White's participation for the upcoming game, which is significant despite not affecting playoff standings.
Before joining the Bills, White had a stint with the Miami Dolphins and previously started for the New York Jets, where he faced the Bills twice, including a notable game in 2022 that ended in injury due to a hit from linebacker Matt Milano. Over his career, White has thrown for 2,219 yards and nine touchdowns, with 13 interceptions across 14 appearances.
